Wild Week: Help The Hedgehogs

The British hedgehog is  classified as vulnerable to extinction however there are many ways that we can help and keep them a common and familiar part of British life.

The following suggestions are from ‘Hedgehog Street’ which is a fantastic charity and has loads of advice and resources: www.hedgehogstreet.org/get-involved.

Garden for Hedgehogs

Wildlife features like log piles, leaf piles, compost heaps and an undisturbed ‘wild patch’ will provide shelter and insect food for hedgehogs.

Let them in!

Give hedgehogs access to your garden with 13cm x 13cm square Hedgehog Highways in or under your fence, and encourage neighbours to do the same.

Make your Garden Safe

Remove hazards like litter, netting and chemicals, and check thoroughly before strimming and mowing. Ensure ponds have a sloped side or escape ramp for any hedgehogs that fall in.

Bed and Breakfast

Hedgehog houses can be bought online or built with our instructions. Supplementary food is also a great way to help – meaty cat or dog food and a shallow dish of water!

Log your sighting

If you are lucky enough to spot a hedgehog in the area, make sure that you log the sighting on the BIG Hedgehog Map.

This map helps to build a picture of hedgehog numbers and locations around the country.

Hedgehog Homes in the Central SANG

We have had a go at building hedgehog houses ourselves and have placed them in the Central SANG.

The basic design enables hedgehogs to enter and exit the box, but prevents larger mammals, such as cats, foxes and badgers from getting in.

Hopefully these will provide a safe home for them to sleep, hibernate, and nest throughout the year.

Mindenhurst Wild Week

During Wild Week we are celebrating the wonderful natural world all around us.

We have arranged a variety of events and activities which we hope the whole community will enjoy.

Please contact us at hello@mindenhurst.co.uk if you have any questions.

Monday 25th July – Local Wildlife Talk

Join Surrey Wildlife Trust for a talk about the animals that are living alongside us and the role SWT play protecting them. The talk will begin at 5.30pm on the decking next to the village pond. Booking is not required, just come along to hear more about our wonderful local wildlife.

Tuesday 28th July – Bat Walk

Book onto our evening bat walk led by Surrey Wildlife Trust and learn more about our nocturnal neighbours. Using a bat detector to hear the calls of bats as they flit overhead on a dusk-lit evening is really an experience not to be missed! To book onto this event please contact hello@mindenhurst.co.uk.

Minibeasts hunt

Wednesday 27th JulyCome along to our minibeast hunt in the Central SANG. Lift a log, dig in the dirt, gaze through the grass and search for the small insects that live in the woodland.  We will help you carefully catch and identify them using a guide sheet. All ages are welcome but children must be accompanied by an adult. You don’t need to book, just come along to the Central SANG (near the SANG hut) anytime between 10am – 12pm and see what you will discover.

Thursday 28th July – Wild Photography Competition

Practise your photography skills and capture a photograph of wildlife in Mindenhurst and Deepcut. Weather you photograph an insect, your dog enjoying a walk, or you are lucky enough to spot a deer, we would love to see them. There will be an under 15s and over 15s category, with a £25 voucher for the winners. Please email your entries to hello@mindenhurst.co.uk by Wednesday 24th August, The photographs will be exhibited at our Community Drop in event on Wednesday 31st August and the winner will be announced by the Major of Surrey Heath, Cllr Whitcroft.

Friday 29th July – Help the Hedgehogs

Hedgehogs numbers are declining in Britain and really need our help. There are many simple things we can all do to make a real difference for hedgehogs; logging sightings, making your garden accessible and hedgehog friendly, or donating to conservation charities. Activities and further information on how we can all help protect on of the UK’s favourite wild animals can be found here.

Random Act of Kindness

For ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on 17th February, Skanska is collecting donations for The Hope Hub to distribute to people who
need their support.

Some of the individuals they work with are in emergency accommodation and only have access to a kettle or microwave. The supplies they need the most are food which can be easily stored and heated. We have put together a list of items they would appreciate:

• ‘Just add water’ items e.g. pot noodles
• Meals in a tin / jar e.g. spaghetti hoops / chicken casserole
• Cereal bars
• Vegetables in a tin / jar
• Cereals
• Men’s deodorant
• Other toiletries: toothbrushes, toothpaste, bodywash

If you are able to donate any of these items please bring them to Skanska’s Project Office, on Newfoundland Road, where there will be a donation box until February 17th.

November 11th

Remembrance Sunday

At 11am on Thursday 11th November, worksites across the development fell silent to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms.

The Skanska team, joined by Trade Contractors and project stakeholders, laid a wreath by the memorial at St Barbara’s Church to show our respect for the bravery and courage of those who fought for our country.
